Climate Changes in Polar and Subpolar Regions, 2011

International conference «Climate Changes in Polar and Subpolar Regions» will be held 17–19 May 2011 in Moscow, Russia at the A. M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) (Pyzhevsky 3, 119017, Moscow, Russia).

The conference topics cover major aspects of climate changes in polar and sub-polar regions including climate feedbacks and atmospheric teleconnections; oceanic circulationand atmosphere-ocean-sea ice interaction; cryospheric changes and atmosphere-land-cryosphere interaction; impact of changing atmospheric composition on climate; and modeling of climate variability and change.

The Scientific Program Committee of the Conference:

I. I. Mokhov (A. M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics RAS, Moscow, Russia; Director)  — Chairperson

G. S. Golitsyn (A. M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics RAS, Moscow, Russia; Head of Department)

V. M. Kattsov (Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory, St. Petersburg, Russia; Director)

O. N. Solomina (Institute of Geography RAS, Moscow, Russia; Deputy Director)

G. V. Alekseev (Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia; Head of Department)

K. Dethloff (Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Potsdam, Germany; Head of Department)

S. S. Zilitinkevich (University of Helsinki, Division of Atmospheric Sciences, Director of Research)

Three main scientific Sections are planned:

1. “Physical processes in the Arctic and Antarctic, responsible for climate change"

Physical processes relevant for climate change in the atmosphere and ocean in polar and subpolar regions will be considered. The main emphasis will be placed on the interaction between atmosphere, ocean and sea ice.

2. “Land surface physical and geochemical processes in high latitudes"

The session will address major problems of land surface change in warming climate including permafrost dynamics, carbon cycle changes and feedbacks and other relevant topics. A particular focus will be on parameterization of land surface and geochemical processes for implementation in global climate models, which play a key role in building reliable projection of future climate change in Arctic and Antarctic.

3. «Sea ice and its role in the climate system»

A broad range of issues related to sea ice and its role in the high latitude climate variability and change will be addressed.

The Local Organizing Committee (A. M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics RAS, Moscow, Russia):

S. N. Kulichkov (Deputy Director)  — Chairperson,

M. V. Kurgansky, I. A. Repina, A. A. Vinogradova, V. A. Semenov, M. S. Artamonova, E. V. Golikova

All who are interested to participate in the conference are welcomed to submit an abstract to the specified E-mail address. A submission should include a title of the presentation and one-page abstract, indicating also the author’s preference (oral or poster presentation). Deadline for abstract submission will be April 15, 2011.
